![]() Norman has everything you need, including supermarkets, veterinarians, and gas stations. The Lake Thunderbird area is busy and located only about 10 miles to the east of Norman which is part of the Oklahoma City metro area. For the most daring, you may continue east and over the dam to climb to the northern territories! Although I did not visit the northern and eastern sections, this may be a good day trip from Oklahoma City. There are numerous different hiking sections around this big lake, but the Clear Bay region is the most densely forested. Lake Thunderbird’s history in Central Oklahoma. Bikers, hikers, and even horses are allowed on most of these paths so make sure to follow etiquette and yield rules when on the paths. This state park has the most trail miles in the state park system, and there are a lot of them! The sign shows several different paths to take including a 3-mile, 13-mile, and a 10-mile advanced loop to take advantage of all the trails. My vehicle was parked at RV slot 6 at Turkey Pass. The showers were free and not coin-operated which is a great perk these days! The campsite was clean and well-kept, and everything worked well. The bathroom was average and consisted of bathrooms and then shower rooms on the back half. Many folks had boats parked nearby and used the neighboring ramp throughout the day. The campground is a standard large RV park and when I visited it was about 75% full. It’s just off Highway 9, which will take you directly into Norman, OK. Pros It’s also about 30 minutes south of Oklahoma City and 20 minutes east of Norman, OK. Lake Thunderbird State Park in central Oklahoma is famous for its 8-mile-long bike and hiking routes.
